New Release: Urza’s Average

Hello! I have a small release for you today that will tie up a couple of loose ends and also build on the groundwork for an upcoming beta test. More information on the beta will be sent out to previous beta testers and Cube Tutor Champions very soon so watch your inbox! In the meantime here are today’s new features & fixes:

New Features & Bug Fixes

  • The algorithm which generates the average cubes has been changed to only use cubes that have been modified in the last six months. This should provide a much more accurate picture of the cards that are currently considered ‘staples’ for the various cube sizes.

  • The Top Cards By Set page can now be accessed using the set code on the URL like this

  • The View Tag page is fully operational once more! e.g.

  • Champion Feature Request 174 – Using the links in the top menu (‘Community’, ‘About’ etc) no longer causes the cube to change to “Ben’s Cube”.

  • Open Graph meta tags have been added to improve link sharing on social media.

  • The process for approving tags for cards has been much improved. Tags for popular cards should now be approved a lot quicker than they have been.

  • A new Featured Cube! If you want your cube to be considered for the spotlight then please get in touch and tell me why it’s awesome:

Happy Cubing!

Bugfix Release: Shadows over Innistrad 1.1

I hope that you all enjoyed the prerelease, personally I’m very excited for this set and can’t wait to draft it! As many of you pointed out the flip/double faced/transform cards from Shadows over Innistrad were missing from the last release. Thanks to everyone who got in touch via Twitter, Facebook and Email – sorry that I didn’t get a chance to reply to all of you but I got so many messages!

A New Feature

So here they are in all their glory! Not only that but I snuck a new feature into this release too. When you hover over the name or image of a Double Faced card, you’ll see both sides. This is something that many of you have asked for via Champion Central so here it is!

If you are a Cube Tutor Champion and you’ve uploaded a custom scan for a double faced card then that image will show instead of the new double sided image.

Enjoy Shadows over Innistrad and I look forward to seeing what you all add to your cubes.

New Release: Shadows over Innistrad

Today’s release brings Shadows over Innistrad & Duel Duels: Blessed v Cursed to Cube Tutor along with some updates to the following promo sets. In some cases I had to settle for less than optimal quality scans of these cards, if you’d like to provide some better scans then read on below!

  • FNM – Latest Promos.

  • Grand Prix – Stoneforge Mystic.

  • Happy Holidays – Goblin Sleigh Ride.

  • Judge Rewards – Command Beacon & Mana Drain.

  • Media Inserts – Various alternate art promos.

  • Game Day – Immolating Glare & Jori En.

  • Prerelease Promos – BFZ & others.

Send me missing card images

I know that we are still missing a few bits and pieces so I’d like to ask for your help in collecting them. If you have a scan of a card that is missing from Cube Tutor, or even if you have a better quality scan than we do then please send them in! Please make sure that:

  1. The card is in English.

  2. The card image completely fills the frame – with or without the border is fine.

  3. The file type is .jpg or .jpeg or .png.

  4. The file name is in lower case with none of the punctuation or spaces removed, e.g.

  • jace, the mind sculptor.jpeg

  • nissa’s renewal.jpg

  • lightning bolt.jpeg

Send them in a zip file or similar to Thank You!

Today’s release also sees an update to the Featured Cube. Check out Khans of Alara “Rearranging the color wheel can create new allied guilds and shards. The focus on these new shards, a plethora of custom cards and unlimited Crumbling Vestiges, combine for a refreshing experience!”

The Average Cubes have also been updated.

Happy Cubing!

Bug Fix Release: Oath of the Gatewatch 1.1

I Wasted no time in getting Oath of the Gatewatch on to Cube Tutor however there were some basic features that only tapped for colourless when they should’ve been tapping for mana of any colour. Oath of the Gatewatch 1.1 has landed!

Bug Fixes

  • Wastes now properly contribute to the card totals on the Deck and Deck Builder pages.

  • The default picture shown for Wastes is now the more attractive full art version.

  • Cube Tutor Champions (you guys rock!) may now upload their own custom image for the Wastes basic land type.

  • Wastes now show up in exported deck lists.

  • Exporting a cube sideboard now works correctly.

  • Exporting either a cube list or sideboard now works nicely with the filter. You can filter your cube as you wish and only export the selected cards.

  • The total card count updates when filtering your cube or sideboard.

Waste away!

New Release: Oath of the Gatewatch

A belated Happy New Year everybody!

It’s been a little while since the last release but in line with the wishes of my Champion community I’ve been focussing on a larger piece of work – more on that in a future update. For now it’s Prerelease weekend and time to get a new set on to Cube Tutor.

Oath of the Gatewatch has brought with it a significant addition to the game in the new Colourless mana symbol. I’ve made the necessary modifications for this symbol but given the fundamental nature of this change there is a small chance that something may be broken. If you find any issues related to the new symbol, or anything else in this release than please do get in touch.

I’m fairly active on Twitter too so for the latest news and updates please do follow me: @cubetutor.

Today Changes

  • Added new set: Oath of the Gatewatch (‘OGW’).

  • Added all new Expeditions to the ‘EXP’ set.

  • You can now add Wastes to your decks through the Deck Builder.

  • Bug Fix: Filtering by subtype now works correctly for BFZ cards.

  • Bug Fix: Setting your land images for a non-primary cube now works properly.

  • Updated Average Cubes.

It is build number 1337 of Cube Tutor no less🙂

Happy Cubing

New Release Land Grant 2.0

It’s time for a release and as promised I present Land Grant 2.0 a little shy of two weeks after Land Grant 1.0.

When Land Grand 1.0 went out I put out a survey to the Champion community to find out how it was going and also to gauge the community response to the granularity of the releases up until now.

You guys gave me a really clear message! 67% of those who took the survey would prefer that I put out larger releases on a less frequent basis. Of that 67%, 60% asked me to focus on rewriting the front end to improve the experience on mobile. I’m very aware that in 2015, Cube Tutor should work a lot better on a phone than it does. The remaining 40% asked me to work on larger releases every 2 months or so.

With this in mind, starting from the next release I will be changing the release model to one release every 2 months. Each release will EITHER consist of features on Champion Central ( or a block of work on the mobile rewrite. I expect the mobile rewrite to take roughly 6 months on my current part time schedule so we’re looking at around three of these larger releases for that. It’s a lot of work!

I will of course continue to roll out bug fixes, new card sets etc as per usual.

Let me know what you think of this plan via Email, Facebook, Twitter or a Cube Tutor Conversation!

One final note before I get on to today’s release. I will be out of the country for 2 weeks from 14th November and am going to a place with very little wifi! This means it’s going to take me a bit longer than usual to respond to your messages and to upgrade Champion accounts.

New Features

See Picks After Saving Deck – This was a large undertaking and has a few facets.

  • If you draft with Castle AI and subsequently build and save a deck you will be able to see the picks made by each Castle AI bot during the draft through that deck’s page.

  • You can now submit Castle AI pick reports after a draft has been completed.

  • In addition you can now click on the Human player (through the deck page only) and see the cards that he/she picked and passed from each pack. This feature is only available when the deck is built from a draft which included 1 or more Castle AI drafters. Therefore it is only available on cubes owned by Champions.

  • Obviously you cannot submit a pick report for a Human player’s picks! Perhaps consider starting a conversation with them instead!

  • This data is only available for decks drafted after the Land Grant 2.0 Release.

  • To make navigation of the picks easier they’ve been reordered so that P1P1 is first and I’ve added ‘Previous’ and ‘Next’ buttons.

Other Additions

  • Added Commander 2015 set.

  • Added missing 2015 Judge Promos.

  • Added missing Dragon’s of Tarkir Dragonfury Promo’s.

  • Fixed the name of ‘Into the Void’ in the Origins Deckbuilders Toolkit set.

Happy Cubing!

New Release: Land Grant 1.0

Hello again, time for another release! Last time around, for Nut Collector 1.0 I set out a new sizing system for these releases and committed to delivering either Two Medium, One Large or an Update on an Extra Large release. Today I’m delivering One Medium release plus and update on an Extra Large release. I’d really hoped to get all of this out as one large release about a week ago but you have to know when to cut your losses. I’d rather get a smaller update out for you guys and explain where I’m at with the bigger piece of work than leave it another week or two before getting the release out, so here we go.

What is not in Today’s Release

I decided to focus on hitting some of the most requested features on Champion Central ( for this release. The top two (Simulated Drafts and See What Castle AI would pick) are simply not achievable in a month but I felt like I could tackle See Picks after saving deck in the time frame.

I was wrong! The real challenge with this piece of work is the sheer volume of data. Every bot has ~45 picks of 1-15 cards, each containing meta data about why that pick was made, plus a list of cards that were passed, with meta data about why those cards were passed! Finding a way to store and retrieve this data sensibly has been the main obstacle to overcome.

As it stands at the moment this piece of work is about 60% complete but still requires a lot of development and testing time. To get it to this stage I’ve gone far beyond my ‘part time’ commitment, particularly over the last two weeks but I still don’t quite have something to show you guys. I’m hoping to get this complete and releasable within the next two weeks as part of a Land Grant 1.x release, so watch this space.

What is in Today’s Release

It was clear to me about half way through the month that I just wasn’t going to get See Picks after saving deck complete in time, so I switched gears a little to tackle another high priority feature from Champion Central Assign Basic Land Art to each cube.

This piece of work is complete and I present it to you today. It has two strands

  • Anyone can change the basic lands used by their cube to one of seven pre-defined sets of basic lands Zendikar (The Default), Unglued, Unhinged, Beta, 7th, Ravnica or Lorwyn.

  • Champions can upload scans of their own basic lands (one scan for each basic land type).

These basic lands are cube-specific and will show up whenever someone drafts your cube and adds basics to their deck. To manage your basic lands simply visit

In addition I have spent a good chunk of time sorting out a bunch of missing cards. Cube Tutor has an automated process for gathering new card data. All of these cards were missing from our source of card information so it was a case of manually downloading the images and writing database inserts. It was very time consuming but it’s something that the community has been asking me for repeatedly over the last few months. Here’s the complete list of added cards.

  • Clash Pack promos – Dromoka, Honored Hierarch, Siege Rhino etc

  • Deck Builders Toolkit Origins Reprints – Aegis Angel, Nightmare, Serra Angel etc

  • Origins Into Pack – Pia and Kiran Nalaar (I’m aware that there are some others that we are still missing)

  • FNM – Frost Walker, Orator of Ojutai, Path to Exile, Roast, Serum Visions, Ultimate Price

  • Launch Party Cards – Blight Herder, Mizzium Meddler

  • Box Toppers/Media Inserts – Genesis Hydra, Relic Seeker, Ruinous Path

  • Game Day – Languish, Conclave Naturalists, Radiant Flames, Stasis Snare

  • Pre Release Promos – All date stamped cards from Tarkir block & Origins

  • WMCQ – Thalia, Liliana of the Veil

  • SDCC Planeswalkers – The 2015 ones!

Bug Fixes & Other:

  • Fixed an issue with deleting a Primary Cube.

  • The Bulk Uploader no longer produces an error when cards are manually added.

  • Updated Average cubes (as of 28/10/2015)

  • A new Featured Cube – Milo: The Gathering’s Noob Cube! Cube Tutor will be working closely with Milo on a super awesome upcoming project so keep an eye out for that. Remember that if you’d like to be considered for the featured cube, just drop me a Conversation or an Email with a message about your cube and why it is awesome.

I’ll be putting out a poll to the Champion community asking you guys how I should proceed with working on your feature requests in the future so look out for that soon.

In the meantime thanks for your understanding and Happy Cubing!

– Ben.

New Release: Nut Collector 1.0

Time for a new release and one named after my first ever favourite card, Nut Collector!

Before I get into the specifics of this release I’d like to talk a bit about the Champion Program and my commitments to the community. As many of you will know I recently surpassed my Part Time Goal on Patreon ( – THANK YOU again!) so this means that I am officially working 1-2 days a week on Cube Tutor building new features and improving existing ones. Part of this commitment is to ship two releases of new features and bug fixes each and every month which essentially means a release every two weeks or after every 2-4 working days. For each release I like to focus on 1-2 decent sized Feature Requests ( whilst also finding time for small bug reports/other suggestions from the community. What I’ve found so far is that 2-4 days just isn’t enough time to build, test and deliver some of the larger items requested through the new voting system. Indeed some of the most requested items (‘Simulated Drafts’, ‘See picks after saving deck’) are large enough to perhaps take longer than a months worth of part time effort.

What all of this means is that I’d like to build some flexibility into my commitment to accommodate some of these larger features. This means that each month on my Part Time Tier I will deliver either:

A) Two Medium Releases, one every two weeks.

B) One Large Release, once a month.

C) An update on an Extra Large release. For cases where I simply cannot complete a large feature in a month (for example: A new UI for Mobile!).

All of these releases will be accompanied by their ‘bugfix’ releases, e.g. Nut Collector 1.1, Nut Collector 1.2 etc.

Please let me know what you think of this proposal, and feel free to send me a
message through the new Conversations system
with your thoughts.

On to the release, and this one’s a doozy. Under the new classification system it would certainly be considered a Large.

Cube Tutor is essentially a social network but you wouldn’t really know that at the moment. Many users have complained that they don’t feel connected to the people who are interacting with their content. One user even went as far as to say that leaving a comment on a deck felt like “throwing it into a black hole”. This release has been all about improving the community aspect of Cube Tutor to make it easier for you guys to communicate with each other and collaborate on building your cubes.

New Features

  • Cube Tutor Conversations – You can now send personal messages to any other user on Cube Tutor! The interface should be fairly familiar to anyone with a smart phone in 2015 and acts more like a chat window than an email messaging system. The profile bar has a new Envelope icon that will notify you of any new messages. You can send a message to a user by either:

  • Email Alerts – Whenever someone interacts with some of your content, or whenever one of your followed cubes is updated you will receive an email notification. Please ensure that your email address is correctly set up here: You can configure which email notifications that you want to receive here: In this first release, emails will be sent out when:

    • Someone comments on your deck, cube update, forum thread, feature request or Castle AI pick report.

    • Someone comments on a deck built from your cube.

    • Someone builds a deck from your cube.

    • Someone replies to a comment that you’ve made.

    • A cube that you follow is updated (if that update has a title).

  • Primary Cube Id – If you have multiple cubes, you can now specify through My Account which of those cubes is your Primary cube. This will be the default cube that you are redirected to after login. It is also the cube that people will be able to draft when they click on your username.

Bug Fixes/Minor Fixes/Other

  • The deck page now has a link to the user who drafted the deck.

  • The cube menu now has a link to the user who owns the cube.
  • Fixed an annoying scroll in Chrome when editing your cube.

  • The card image window now appears in a visible position when you hover over a card name at the bottom or right of the screen.

  • Filtering by sub type on the Top Cards page now works properly.

  • The My Account pages no longer revert the active cube back to “Ben’s cube”.

  • Fixed a bug where new members were not able to post a new topic on their forum.

  • Fixed a bug where forum topic replies could end up on the wrong topic when using multiple tabs.

  • You should now be able to click on a username everywhere on the site. Let me know if you find somewhere where you cannot.

  • Implemented a new process for gathering card information and images for new sets and those which do no appear on

  • Fixed a bug where changing a card’s set to Beta (B) would sometimes set it to Beatdown (BD) instead.

  • The ‘Reset Cube’ and ‘Delete Cube’ operations have been sped up significantly.

  • New Featured Cube: Medieval Cube!

Castle AI

The tags on over 1000 additional cards have now been approved meaning that Castle AI should now perform better on Pauper and Peasant cubes. In addition I’ve reviewed every report so far and provided my own feedback.

New Sets

Using the new system for gathering card information I have added the following sets to Cube Tutor:

  • From the Vault: Angels

  • Ugin’s Fate Promos

  • Duel Deck: Zendikar vs Eldrazi

  • Magic Online: Tempest Remastered

Note that we are still (sadly) missing the following as they don’t appear on OR our new source.

  • Origins Clash Pack

  • SDCC 2015 cards

  • Game Day Languish

  • Origins & M15 Intro Pack Promos.

Resolved Feature Requests after this release

  • Feature 80 – Set the own cube as landing page after log in

  • Feature 95 – Link to Name of Drafter

  • Feature 104 – User Pms

  • Feature 114 – Card Image Window – Show up where visible

  • Feature 134 – Email Notifications when Cubes you Follow have a Blog Post

The Future

This is just the start of my improvements to the social aspect of Cube Tutor. I will be adding emails for more ‘events’ in the near future as well as moving towards a global Cube Tutor Forum.

I hope that you like this release, and as ever please get in touch with me through the usual channels if you have any suggestions or requests.

Happy Cubing!

– Ben

New Release: Meditate 1.1

People often ask me this question:

I’ve just created a cube on Cube Tutor. Why are the draft bots passing me Black Lotus?”

The simple answer is because you haven’t trained them yet! The basic AI (Cube Tutor AI) makes its decisions based on your observed pick orders (the Draft Charts on your Analysis page), and without any data they pick semi-randomly to start with.

Whilst this makes sense it isn’t very clear, which is why I’ve decided to introduce a new concept; the AI Rating. This is a numerical representation of how trained your bots are, the minimum being 1 and the maximum 100. If you’ve done enough drafts for the AI to have a good idea of how to rate every card in your list then you will have the maximum score.

Not only should this make things clearer for new members but it will also help established members to work out whether they’ve seeded their draft bots with enough data after an update.

New Features

  • AI Rating – A numerical representation of how trained your Cube Tutor AI bots are. This appears on the Draft page and under the summary section of your cube blog.

Bug Fixes

  • Sorting by tags on the Edit List page no longer causes an error.

  • Fixed an issue where it wasn’t possible to close images such as the Cube Image once they’d been clicked on.

  • Fixed some styling issues on the Draft & Analysis pages.
